"World leading "research

Kent Cancer Trust has long been aware of the quality of research work undertaken by the University of Kent. It was therefore delighted to hear that the recently published Research Excellence Framework 2021 described the Candida Management Pathway and associated research impact case as” world leading”

The Research Excellence Framework is a seven-year government assessment exercise that attempts to judge research intensity and quality in UK universities.

The Candida Management Pathway links together the work Kent Cancer Trust has helped to fund primarily with the project dealing with the problems caused by biofilm growing on the valve of the prosthesis used following removal of a patient’s larynx as a result of throat cancer. Before this work led to the development of a new treatment protocol a patient needed to have the prosthesis removed and replace every 2 to 3 weeks. As a result of the project, a prosthesis only needs replacing every 6 months!

This is a significant benefit to patients and hospital staff alike and it is great to see this achievement being recognised by the Research Excellence Framework report.

Kent Cancer Trust applauds the Multi-Dimensional Team of University pf Kent scientists and the hospital staff from East Kent Hospitals for their excellent work in achieving this excellent result.
